Don't Give Up! God Is Faithful

Have you been waiting on God for something that seems like it will never come? Don't give up. A delay is not a denial. God isn't bound by time, so He is never late, and you can never waste time with a timeless God. Your part is to stay faithful and stay prepared while He works, because He keeps every promise He makes.

Key takeaways

  • A delay is not a denial: God isn't bound by time, so He is never late.
  • It is never too late for God's promise, because His purposes don't expire, as Caleb showed when he asked for his land at eighty-five.
  • God is both transcendent, above all things, and immanent, present with you in every moment of your hard season.
  • Your part while you wait is to stay faithful and prepared, and God stays faithful even when you fail.

Is it too late for God to fulfill His promise to you?

No, it is not too late. God's purposes don't expire, and as long as you have breath, He is doing something in your life.

For example, look at Caleb. Decades after God promised him a piece of the land of Canaan, he was an old man, and he still asked for it.

Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out.

Joshua 14:10 to 11

The weekend message behind this Beyond Sunday episode summed up Caleb's life in one line: faith does not retire, it rises. You get tired. There's a limit to what you can do in a day or a lifetime. God has no such limits, and He has a purpose for all of your life, beginning to end.

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Psalm 139:16

God didn't just wake up today and discover what's happening in your life. He already knows.

Why does God's timing feel so slow?

God's timing feels slow because you live inside time and He doesn't. You see life in weeks, months, and calendars made by people. God works on kingdom time, across centuries and millennia.

The Bible shows this again and again. When Jesus heard that His friend Lazarus was sick, He didn't rush to Bethany. When He arrived, Lazarus had already died, and Martha said what many of us have prayed.

"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died."

John 11:21

But Jesus had a plan and a purpose. He knew exactly when to go. And Jesus Himself came into history at exactly the right moment.

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law.

Galatians 4:4

God is never late and never early. He only seems late to us.

How can God be outside of time and still be with you?

God is both beyond time and fully present in every moment. Theologians use two words for this. Transcendence means God is above and beyond all things, wholly other than His creation. Immanence means He is present and involved in His creation right now.

Christians have taught this for centuries. On Beyond Sunday, host Pastor Sean Sloan quoted Athanasius, an early church leader. Athanasius wrote that God is above all and so is not limited by anything. Yet He is in everything by His power, giving life to all things. We have a hard time picturing a God who isn't bound by space or time. But not only is God everywhere; He is present at every moment at once.

Pastor Sean also pointed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer's insight that God isn't found only at the edges of what we can't explain. He is present in the middle of ordinary life. That's why one of Jesus' names is Immanuel, which means "God with us."

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

Revelation 1:8

Jesus spoke about Himself the same way, and He used God's own name to do it.

"Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

John 8:58

What does God's timelessness mean for your hard season?

God's timelessness means you will never face a situation He isn't already in. He was there before you arrived. He knows what you know about the past and the present, and He knows what you can't know: the future.

Every challenge you face, He saw it first. He is already in the future you can't see. And He isn't limited in resources or capacity. Wherever God is, all the resources of heaven are present, and God is everywhere.

So if you're still waiting, you're not wasting time. During the waiting, God is still working.

What is your part while you wait?

Your part is to stay faithful and stay prepared. God is sovereign, and you are responsible. Scripture teaches both, and it doesn't ask you to choose between them.

The weekend message warned against a "hammock faith" that swings back and forth. It says, "If God wants it, He'll just do it." God can do whatever He wants. But Caleb never let himself fall below the preparation line for the promise. He kept himself strong and ready for forty-five years.

What does that look like for you? Keep doing what God has already told you to do. Stay obedient in the ordinary days. Keep praying, keep serving, and keep growing, so that when the promise arrives, you're ready to step into it.

What if you've failed while waiting?

God stays faithful even when you don't. Your waiting doesn't depend on your perfect record. It depends on His character.

If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

2 Timothy 2:13

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

Numbers 23:19

Every word God has spoken will come to pass in His time. Your role is to remain in faith and remain faithful until then.

Try this week

  • Write down a promise or prayer you are still waiting on, and give it back to God.
  • Read Joshua 14:6 to 14 and notice how Caleb kept himself ready.
  • Ask what preparation God may be asking of you while you wait, and take one step on it.
  • Each time you feel impatient, pray, "Lord, You are on time."
  • Tell a trusted friend what you're waiting for, so someone can pray with you.

Pray

Lord, You are never late. You were in my yesterday, You are with me today, and You are already in my tomorrow. Keep me faithful and ready while I wait, and help me trust that You will keep every promise. Amen.

Common questions

Why is God taking so long to answer my prayer?

God works on His timing, not ours. A delay is not a denial. Like Jesus with Lazarus, God may be waiting for a purpose you can't yet see.

Who was Caleb in the Bible?

Caleb was one of the spies Moses sent into Canaan, and he trusted God's promise when others didn't. Forty-five years later, at eighty-five, he asked Joshua for the land God had promised him, showing faith that kept rising.

What does it mean that God is timeless?

God is not bound by time. He is the One who was, who is, and who is to come. He sees past, present, and future at once, and He is also present with you right now.

If God is sovereign, do my choices matter?

Yes. Scripture teaches that God is in control and that we are responsible. Like Caleb, we stay faithful and prepared while trusting God to fulfill His word.
