How to Live a Flourishing Life
Everyone wants a full life. Culture says that means money, status, health, and happiness. Jesus offers something better and sturdier: a life rooted in God, held up by community, and pointed toward a purpose bigger than you. A flourishing life still has struggles, and it keeps standing through them.
Key takeaways
- In John 10:10, "life to the full" means a life filled and led by the Holy Spirit, not a life of wealth or a life without problems.
- Money and success cannot make you flourish, because they are temporary and were never designed to carry that weight.
- You can flourish when life is hard, because joy in Christ holds up even in the struggle.
- Flourishing happens in relationship: planted in God, placed among believers, and purposed for others.
What does Jesus mean by "life to the full"?
Jesus means a life filled and led by the Holy Spirit, with strength, purpose, and joy that last. He doesn't mean a life of wealth or a life without problems.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10
God clearly wants abundance for you. But Beyond Sunday host Pastor Sean Sloan was careful to separate that from a prosperity message. That message says God wants to make you rich, attractive, and strong. His guest was Karen Carter, who leads Next Steps at Calvary. In her words, a flourishing Christian life is one that can persevere, overcome struggles, and find strength in the storm.
The same Jesus who promised life to the full also said this:
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
Matthew 16:25
It's an upside down kingdom. The first will be last. It is more blessed to give than to receive. Losing your life is how you find it. There's a hunger in every person that only God can fill. Many of us keep trying to fill it with the things of this world.
Why don't money and success make us flourish?
Because they're temporary, and they were never designed to carry that weight. God designed people to flourish from the very beginning. He placed the first humans in a garden full of life and told them to be fruitful and multiply.
Then the deceiver offered another way. The lie was that God was holding something back, and that following Him would make you less. Take control, decide right and wrong for yourself, and you'll gain something.
The world still makes that offer. Wealth, status, fame, and position all promise fulfillment. All of them go away when the body does. Many people who flourish by those measures eventually come to the end of themselves and find the promises empty. God offers something that isn't only meaningful at the end. It sustains you to the end.
Can you flourish when life is hard?
Yes. In fact, a faith that has been tested and is still standing may be the clearest picture of flourishing there is. Culture says be happy, make money, get a good job. Believers are offered something deeper: joy instead of mere happiness, joy that holds up even in the struggle.
Christians live between the now and the not yet. Your final home has no more tears and no more death. In this life you still face loss and pain, but you are being restored to what God designed you to be.
Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known.
1 John 3:2
Why can't you flourish alone?
Because God made you for relationship. In modern culture, flourishing has become mostly about the individual: how do I get ahead? In Christian thought, it has always been about relationship. There is no real good for you that isn't also good for the people around you.
The weekend message at Calvary laid this out in three words:
- Planted: putting down roots in your own relationship with the Father.
- Placed: being part of the body of Christ, connected to other believers.
- Purposed: having a role to play, both for other believers and for people who don't yet know Jesus.
Karen explained why "placed" matters so much. When you try to do life alone, the enemy's lies have more room. The message compared it to a gazelle that wanders away from the herd. When you're together, a friend can say, "That's not what the Bible says. You don't have to believe that."
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:12
How can you help others find a flourishing life?
Live an honest walk with God where people can see it. The church helps the world flourish by being salt and light, present in people's lives and pointing the way.
Karen said it starts with authenticity. Don't pretend everything is fine all the time. Let people who are exploring faith know it's okay to have questions, and that you'll walk with them while they look for answers.
Then live in a way that provokes the question: how can you have hope? Storms eventually hit everyone. When the world's promises fall apart, the people around you will know someone who can say, "You were made for more." And they'll find that God was already at work in their lives before you arrived.
A flourishing checkup: planted, placed, purposed
- Planted: Do I have a daily time to read Scripture and pray, even a short one?
- Placed: Am I connected to other believers who know me well enough to speak truth to me?
- Purposed: Who is one person God has put in my life who needs to see hope in me?
- Released: What is one thing I've been chasing for fulfillment that I need to hand back to God?
Pray
Jesus, You came to give me life to the full. Plant me deep in You, place me among Your people, and show me my purpose. When I chase what can't last, turn my heart back to You. Amen.
Common questions
What does abundant life mean in John 10:10?
Abundant life is a full life led by the Holy Spirit and rooted in a relationship with God. It doesn't promise wealth or freedom from struggle; it means strength, purpose, and joy that last, even in hard seasons.
Is the abundant life the same as the prosperity gospel?
No. The prosperity gospel says God wants to make you wealthy and healthy. Jesus' promise of life to the full centers on a Spirit-led relationship with God that can stand through hardship.
Why do I need community to flourish?
God made you for relationship. Alone, you are an easier target for the enemy's lies. In community, others strengthen and correct you, and you get to strengthen them in return.
How can Christians help others flourish?
By living as salt and light with an honest walk with God, staying present in people's lives, and offering hope when the world's promises fall short.
