What Is Blessing?
Follows the message Kingdom Blessing from the Kingdom series
When people say they need a blessing, they usually mean something big: a raise, a breakthrough, a winning ticket. In Scripture, blessing starts much closer to home. It flows from who God is, it follows His presence, and it is meant to pass through you to the people around you.
Key takeaways
- A blessing from God is His goodness given to you as a gift, flowing from His nature rather than your effort.
- If you know Jesus, you are already blessed, and gratitude is the first response to that blessing.
- You receive God's blessing by seeking His kingdom first, because blessing follows His presence (Matthew 6:33).
- Being "blessed to be a blessing" means God's goodness is meant to flow through you to others, like a river, not a reservoir.
What is a blessing from God?
A blessing is God's goodness given to you as a gift. It comes from His nature, not from your effort. Blessing is not mainly something you obtain. It is part of who God is.
Look at the very first chapter of the Bible. Before sin, before the curse, God created people and then immediately blessed them.
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it."
Genesis 1:27 to 28
God didn't have to create you. He did, He wants to be with you, and He blessed you from the start. Our culture talks about blessing in a me-centered way, as something I receive when I finally get what I want. Scripture shows a God who blesses because that is who He is.
Are you already blessed?
If you know Jesus, yes. On Beyond Sunday, Pastor Landon Sloan, Calvary's kids pastor, put it simply: if you are sitting in church, you are already blessed.
We tend to overlook the blessings in front of us while we wait for a lottery moment. Being alive is a blessing. So is having clothes, being able to drive to church, and having a God who gives your life purpose and wants to be with you. Pastor Landon said that preparing his message on blessing left him with one honest conclusion: "Man, I need to be more grateful."
Gratitude is the first response to blessing. You can't receive what you refuse to notice.
How do you receive God's blessing?
You receive God's blessing by seeking His kingdom first. Blessing follows God's presence, so the more you pursue Him, the more you find everything else you need.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33
The kingdom of God was the subject Jesus spoke about more than any other. It is God's rule and His presence, and wherever He is, blessing follows. When you pray about health, provision, wisdom, relationships, or healing, what you need most is the Giver. All the resources of heaven come with Him.
Pastor Landon made an important point here. Most of us don't have an effort problem. We are always seeking something. We look for protection, provision, and purpose in a dozen places. The question is what we are seeking. Seasons of change, like a new school year, make this obvious. Newness makes us anxious, and we grab for something to hold on to. God offers all of it in His presence, and He knows what you need before you ask.
So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
Matthew 6:31 to 32
Does being blessed mean you won't suffer?
No. Being blessed does not mean you skip hard seasons. It means you know God is present and good, so you can trust Him to be working in them.
That is what people mean when they say they are "too blessed to be stressed." You can cast your cares on God because He cares for you. You can have peace, not because nothing is going wrong, but because you know His character.
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Isaiah 26:3
What does "blessed to be a blessing" mean?
It means God's goodness to you is meant to flow through you to others. A blessing is for you, but it is never only about you. In his weekend message, Pastor Landon described it as being a river, not a reservoir.
Blessing in Scripture is also often spoken out loud. God made, then blessed. Jesus gave thanks, blessed, and broke the bread. Calvary ends its services with the blessing God gave Aaron to speak over His people.
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24 to 26
On the episode, the host asked a challenging question. What if you spoke blessing over your school, home, workplace, kids, spouse, and even your boss and your government?
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs 18:21
How can parents speak blessing over their kids?
Pray over your kids and speak life to them, especially when they are struggling. You don't need perfect words or all the answers. You are inviting God into the moment.
Pastor Landon told parents that dropping kids off and picking them up is not a back seat role. Your presence matters, and the influence you bring to your home matters. If your child is having a hard time, pray blessing over them. If you are a teacher and your classroom is struggling, speak blessing over your students and coworkers.
You are not the source of the blessing. God is. But He invites you into the process. Instead of only waiting on God in a dark moment, you can bring Him into it: "I'm bringing God into this. I'm speaking life over you." His word does what He sends it to do.
Try this week
- Before you ask God for anything new, write down five ordinary blessings from today.
- Pray Numbers 6:24 to 26 out loud over your kids before school.
- Pick one place, like your classroom, office, or street, and speak a short blessing over it each morning.
- Ask one person, "How can I pray for you?" and pray with them on the spot.
- When you feel anxious, ask yourself: what am I seeking right now? Then turn that need into a prayer.
Pray
Father, thank You for blessing me before I ever did anything to earn it. Forgive me for overlooking what You have already given. Help me seek Your kingdom first, and let Your goodness flow through me to my family, my school, and my workplace. Amen.
Common questions
What does it mean to be blessed by God?
Blessing comes from God's own nature. He blessed people the moment He created them. Life, purpose, and His presence are blessings, and the more you seek His kingdom, the more you see His goodness in your life.
What does "blessed to be a blessing" mean?
It means God's goodness to you is meant to flow through you to others. A blessing is for you, but never only about you. Think of yourself as a river, not a reservoir.
How can parents speak a blessing over their children?
Pray Scripture over them, like the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24 to 26, and speak words of life when they struggle. You don't need perfect words, because you are inviting God into the moment.
Does being blessed mean I won't suffer?
No. Hard seasons still come for believers. Knowing God is present and good lets you trust that He is working in those seasons too.
